To view it, click here. I read another book of her's so found this among my mom's books and had to read I have to say I was annoyed good part of the book.

Like many others have said it's a car wreck or train wreck but I could not put it down no matter how annoyed I was with Gillian.

I was all for her going to a new city to start a new life but my goodness this woman. She falls for this manchild she just met, they start seeing eachother she invites him not just into her life but her daughter's life as well, finds out he has a "roomate" and a female one at that.

He's a big douche and takes forever to remove this said roomate. They plan a summer vacation all is going well until Gillian comes back from a job early to find him with another woman he met in town that day.

She gets her daughter from a friend of theirs and the next day goes back home so this is it this guy is out of the picture now nope he worms is way back in they go back to their summer vacation while her daughter goes to her father's for a month.

So you're already annoyed she took him back but than she finds out she pregnant this man takes her to a clinic to get it taken care of she wants to keep it so he tells her to go back home to NY where she has friends that can help how he can't stand seeing her and her getting bigger she already gave notice to her landlord as she was to move in with him but nope she uproots her devasted daughter back to NY they are home they began to move on she finds a good man Gorden.

They became close she almost forget about Chris but nope here he is in NY on a job stays with her orders her around she of course makes love to him that first day totally disregarding Gorden.

Chris was to stay for a month decides he best put a ring on it before Gorden she agrees. All seems well he finally might be growing up buys a cradle for their baby, you're thinking well maybe this'll be a hapoy ending.

Nope he dies from breaking his neck in a fall. She just thinks of him doesn't care about anything anymore not even her daughter.

This us what gets me most she lost the baby he died 7 hrs after birth. I don't understand that one so she again just doesn't care for anything understandable losing a child but she still had Samantha.

Poor Samantha always out of the loop. Finally months later her long time friends snaps her out of it she decides to go visit Gorden in France.

I just had to finish the book. It could have been written better Chris' poor mom lost her husband two sons and than her grandchild by one of those sons so I felt having tge baby die was a bit much.

Sorry long rant. Sep 05, Claudia rated it it was ok. I am not necessarily a fan of Danielle Steel, but I was curious to read her first novel.

It was written in the early 70s and is set at that time. As such, the book is a time capsule. I gave this novel 2 stars for that reason.

It is not especially well written, the characters are not likable, and the plot is unfortunate. A recently divorced single mom gets involved with a man who is a complete bastard.

For some reason, she falls in love with this sociopath who treats her like garbage. Part of the I am not necessarily a fan of Danielle Steel, but I was curious to read her first novel.

Part of the situation is based on the decadence of the "Free Love" movement. Regardless of society loosening it's sexual restrictions, the guy is still a creep.

When he dropped dead due to an accident at work, the protagonist really lucked out. At the time she was very pregnant with his baby, and they planned to marry.

Bullet dodged. Then she lost the baby. Shortly thereafter, she reconnected with another guy and road off into the sunset in France with him.

This book is so similar to Once in a lifetime both terrible. The main character in Going home, Gillian, is so similar to Daphne , Once in a lifetime, both lose partners to death deaths , both move between California and New York - both places described much the same way.

Both at one point stay in an emotionally abusive relationship with a guy who cheats in the bed they share, ,both have a young kid, both have a best friend who I've only ever read 2 Danielle Steel books and my oh my copy paste!

Well, I recently decided to read it again and honestly, I can't believe I adored it the way I did. I found myself annoyed with the main character more than anything.

I give it to Steel. She is amazing with words. She knows how to make you not want to put her books down. She knows how to make you laugh and cry.

But this book doesn't justify Steel's abilities one bit. I would really like to read one of her I first read this in high school. I would really like to read one of her more recent novels just to compare.

I hope I don't end up feeling the same way. Overall, this is a quick read. I may not have been too thrilled at the plot, but I couldn't put it down and it took me just two days to read the whole thing.

I suppose it would be a great beach read, or a book to bring on a long trip or weekend getaway. Jul 17, Ira Bespalova rated it liked it Shelves: read-because-liked-the-cover , didn-t-enjoy , touchy.

The first book by Steel I've ever read. The feelings are ambiguous. The book seemed to be total trash in the beginning.

The main protagonist Gillian pissed me off, I must admit, mainly because of her strange attitude to love and relations between men and women. I was perplexed and puzzled at how she kept forgiving that badass Chris who was cheating on her continuously.

There were other men around who could make her happy and she kept dragging behind that Chrissy-boy and ruining her life to piece The first book by Steel I've ever read.

There were other men around who could make her happy and she kept dragging behind that Chrissy-boy and ruining her life to pieces.

Nevertheless, giving the subject second thought, I realized that it's unfair to judge her that way. So many women fall for bastards rejecting good guys and can't do a thing about it.

That's in our nature.. On the other hand, the book has many good points. I loved the description of New York, it totally coincides with my understanding of this fantastic city!

Thumbs Up! The thing most precious in this book is the end, that is the last pages. The ending is absolutely wonderful, vivid and sentimental. Made me cry once.

The end is strong, maybe too strong for such a mediocre book. View 1 comment. Feb 05, Bookworm Adventure Girl rated it did not like it Shelves: to-donate.

Would Gillian have made the right decision on her own? I doubt it. This is the first Danielle Steel book I read. I was probably 12 and thinking back it was probably too mature for me, but I still remember the story and have gone back and read it many times since then.

Jun 13, Lynette rated it it was amazing. I read this book when i was so young and shouldn't have been reading such books yet.

It made me cry rivers Gillian just loved that wrong guy Chris and he really took her for a ride Nov 22, Amy rated it did not like it. Glad this wasn't the first Danielle Steel book I ever read I would never have read another one.

Jun 09, Tonya rated it it was amazing. This is probably the only Danielle Steel novel I would ever consider re-reading. Jul 30, MrsF.

Jan 06, Jeanne rated it liked it. It's a. I read Danielle Steele for the first time back in the '80s and was a fan for many years until she moved from the romance genre in a direction that I didn't care for.

Going Home is the first of her books that I've read in the past 15 years or more. It was the first book she ever wrote.

Frustratingly, most of the lead characters, especially Jimmy, come across as erratic. Their behavior at times seems entirely unrealistic and whatever motivations they might have are never really explored.

About the only thing that saves this movie from a lower rating is Mitchum's characteristically strong performance considering the confused story and direction he has to contend with.
